Sino-Western confrontation in the 19 th century: ideological, economic, and military conflicts 2. “Foreign Brothers” ( Yang xiongdi 洋洋洋 ): a new type of image of the West II. One Taiping, Different Stories 1. Rebellion: Qing emperors condemned the Taipings as “long-hair bandits 洋洋 ” (or “Canton bandits 洋洋 ”). 2. Admiration: Sun Yat-sen called himself “Hong Xiuquan the Second” and regarded Hong as a “nationalist hero.” 3. Mystification: Mao Zedong described Hong as “a peasant hero,” and the Taiping Rebellion as an uprising of the suppressed class overthrowing the ruling class. 4. Depreciation: some scholars described the Taipings as a superstitious, rebellious, reactionary cult, and Hong as a greedy, selfish, lustful, arrogant, and incompetent man. III. Hong Xiuquan: God’s Chinese Son 1. Hong’s old dream of a Confucian career at youth and his failures in the Civil Service Examinations 2. Hong’s new dream (or vision) of a “heavenly family”
