Named England, land of Anglo Saxons Culture, Social organization, Government Anglo Saxons were a Germanic tribe that found their way to what is known as England Pagan, warrior society Believed in wergild (blood revenge) Man money- offender's family pays for the things lost Placed importance on acquisition and distribution of treasure Sign of importance within society Status symbol Given by king/ chief, showed distinction and honor Hungered for glory and honor in battle Men proved worth by fighting Celebrated feats of warriorhood in heroic poetry Ex. Beowulf Went to meadhall and drank to celebrate Were nomadic, seafaring people Looked at life with uncertainty Colored outlook on world Deep belief in a fixed destiny A force (destiny) that controlled their actions and outcomes Fate/destiny Wyrd- old english word for fate/destiny Gloomy outlook on life Shapes and defines temperament Melancholy race Landscape was full of forests and gloomy water, ocean, mist and fogs Wild places Land of perpetual mist Bogs, moors, water everywhere Social Organization Organized into tribes or kingdoms
