Developmental transitions -Developmental phases 3 phases in plants Juvenile (vegetative): not capable of flowering in response to environmental cues Adult (vegetative) competent to flower when appropriate Reproductive: producing flowers Figure 25.9 -Phase changes Transitions between developmental phases are called phase changes Transition from juvenile to adult can be gradual Often there are changes in morphology, phyllotaxy, and other characters Phase changes are determined at each meristem individually -Juvenile to adult transition Figure 25.10 Juvenile to adult transitions occur in all plants –whether you can see them or not -Some changes are subtle; some plants have no morphological changes Juvenile plants can last for days or decades, but it is not entirely age-dependent Plant size is primary requirement for juvenile to adult transition -Size of meristem -Number of leaves produced -Hormones and sugars at the meristem Table 25.1
