Chris Baxter History of Las Vegas Image Analysis The image I chose for this analysis paper is the Excalibur hotel and casino Las Vegas. The Excalibur Hotel Las Vegas is an exciting and different themed hotel in the southern portion of Las Vegas Boulevard. Nestled between New York New York and the Luxor Hotel the Excalibur is a medieval themed resort that offers anyone the chance to be a powerful knight or princess while they enjoy all the amenities that Excalibur has to offer. (Excalibur.com) The first indentifying theme here at Excalibur is of course the medieval knight theme where patrons that approach the facility will immediately recognize and feel as though they have traveled back in time to a day and age where power was the only thing that kept you alive, and separated royalty from peasantry. ‘Disneyland in the Desert’ is the predominate theme for all Las Vegas design and the Excalibur is no exception. (Early Vegas) This resort plays to the kid in us all.

Chris Baxter History of Las Vegas Image Analysis The designs of casinos on the strip are intended to be flamboyant and unique. This is good advertising. (Venturi p.34) Instead of building every structure to look block like and standard, early resort owners realized that they needed to set there casino apart from the others, so the race to create the most unique building began. Excalibur is a fantasy idea. Any little kid that grew up reading fairy tales about the powerful Kings and Knights that saved beautiful Queens and Princesses are immediately interested in a design such as this. This medieval theme tells them that you too could be part of this magical experience, just come right in. One more specific feature of this design is the castle wall around the building. It happens to fit into the theme, but also plays on an early concept that if casino owners put a fence around their complex it makes the people staying there feel as though they are safe, nothing can happen to them
