EXPERIMENT 9 POLYMERS Name: Dhara Patel Debbie Lo (Lab Partner) Date: April 4, 2008 Objective: To synthesize aspirin and determine the likelihood of the synthetic method using percent yield of purified aspirin over the theoretical value. The purity of the product is confirmed by measuring its melting point range. Second part of the experiment was to identify if phenolic compound is present when performing ferric chloride test with given compounds, phenol, salicylic acid, crude aspirin and purified aspirin. Discussion: In this lab, the first part was to synthesize the aspirin by taking 2.12 grams of 0.015 moles of salicylic acid and adding it to 5.0 mL of weighted 5.40 grams of 0.053 moles of acetic anhydride with 5 drops of 85% phosphoric acid in the 125 mL Erlenmeyer flask. Then, placed the flask into the beaker of boiling water and added 2 mL of water, causing the solution to react exothermically with the excess acetic anhydride turned into acetic acid.
