EXPERIMENT 5 THIN-LAYER AND PAPER CHROMATOGRAPHY Name: Dhara Patel Date: March 7, 2008 Objective: The purpose of this laboratory exercise was to identify the unknown proprietary analgesic drug by using thin-layer chromatography (TLC) technique and to be familiarized with paper chromatography. Discussion: For the first part of the experiment, was to identify an unknown proprietary analgesic drug by using the thin-layer chromatography. This was analyzed with the unknown drug and evaluating any similarities in spots migration corresponding with the same Rf value of drugs that contained common analgesics. The whole process success depended on how the silica-gel TLC plate was prepared, handled and recorded. After marking 1 cm pencil line from the end of the plate and staining the 5 dots. Subsequently, when the ethyl acetate (solvent) rose to the top of the plate, the plate was able to be examined under the ultraviolet light to identify the unknown component.
