Republic: Representative democracy—representatives makes decisions What are the three forms of equality and how does America fit these three? Equality: All citizens enjoy the same privileges, status, and rights before the laws. 1) Social equality: All individuals enjoy the same status in society. 2) Political equality: Every person has the same political rights and opportunities. 3) Economic equality: A situation where there are only small differences in wealth between citizens. America has equality for social and political equality, however, for Economic equality America is ranked among third world countries. James Madison What is the problem with the reality of the American dream? American Dream: If you are talented and work hard, you can achieve financial success. Critics argue that hard work is no longer enough; poor and middle class are falling farther behind the rich. What is the evidence counter to the idea that the U.S. is individualistic? American politics include individualism and solidarity, different leaders, parties, and groups weigh the two values in different ways. America is more on the individualistic spectrum but we pass laws and programs to help our own. Public Opinion What is public opinion? Citizens’ collective attitudes and beliefs about politics and government Communication from citizens to their government Why should government find it prudent to heed public opinion? Public opinion is a direct connection to democracy. “Rule by the people” (V.O.  Key???) Why is public opinion important? It influences public policy. Gives feedback to politicians. Also can hear from  letters/emails; meetings newspapers but often use polls and surveys.  Self-rule in democracy  Public opinion guides government action What aspects of public opinion do political science study?
