Things didn’t seem as they thought it would be when they reached America. Once Jurgis reached Chicago he immediately marries his fiancé Ona Lukoszaite. Jurgis, his wife and their immediately family settled in a small town called Packingtown and let’s just say it wasn’t the best town either. Packingtown was the town of industrial stockyards where cattle was slaughtered and processed into canned and packaged meats. The living conditions in Packingtown weren’t great so the family began looking for a house of their own. The family learned about how corrupt and scandalizing the industry was in Packingtown. Jurgis was between jobs during the book and his family was going through many crises. Losing his father, and then losing his wife and two sons; Jurgis alcoholic condition began to worsen.
