Course Description and Objectives As we examine the state of the economy, it is increasingly apparent that the economic recovery remains anemic and political turmoil in the Middle East and Europe further complicates the recovery effort. Burdened with debt, a dysfunctional political system, and continued debate over the direction of the country, the reality is that these events have further constrained business activity. When one considers how interconnected the global economy is and the importance of the US economy to global economic activity, it stands to reason that through multiplier and accelerator effects, the true costs of the government’s failure to avoid such crises as approving increases in the debt limit, controlling government spending, and enacting a budget all contribute to global uneasiness and economic turmoil. Under these circumstances, executives continue to express discomfort at making significant capital investments in the face of such uncertainty. With this new focus on recognizing the limitations of human behavior and how self-aggrandizing actions may imperil the good fortunes of an entire nation and

imperil global economic growth, the focus seems to be on a number of issues including: (1) will recent changes in regulations influence how firms; (2) for how long can we expect executives to be ‘good corporate citizens;’ (3) is there too little emphasis on ethics in strategy; (4) how can firms ensure control over resources to sustain their competitiveness; and (5) what strategies and models can businesses adopt in the new competitive environment in which the competitive conditions are being redefined. Hence, one is forced to address the questions: ‘What should be the focus of any firm strategy? And, ‘what can firs do to minimize the political uncertainty that can have such far-reaching effects on their businesses?’ Business Policy and Strategy is a senior-level management course that focuses on firm efforts to attain and sustain a competitive advantage.
