Astronomy Jan. 22, 2008 Why Use Astronomy as a springboard for learning about how Science works? - the usual reasons o Much of modern science has roots in ancient astronomical observations o The historical record shows some particularly clean examples of how progress in science mirrors progress in our understanding of astronomy - my two reasons: o modern astronomy deals with such big ideas its easy to get muddled between real science and pseudo-science/metaphysics. Unless you clearly understand the distinction you’ll get confused. o I want to arm you with knowledge to protect you from arrofant jerks who want you to believe everything is science and if you’re not doing science your activity is meaningless face How Science Works Whether nor not this process is applied defines science Science in Pseudoscience: Astrology - Galileo had an illegitimate daughter, Sr. Maria Celeste - Galileo’s horoscope for his daughter is among his papers. Galileo evidently didn’t feel astrology was absurd. Why should we? -
