Unformatted text preview: What is light?- Newton thought light consisted of a stream of particles- Thomas young - Light acts like a wave- Light in 2 wave experiment: sometimes the light waves cancel each other out (destructive interference) or constructible interfere (get lighter) Wave Terminology- height = amplitude (how bright it gets)- distance between successive crests in a wave = wavelength - waves that move o waves normally move: a wave is a travelling disturbance in some kind of medium o Frequency = number of crests passing a given point each second o Wave speed = frequency times wavelength o Light waves = electromagnetic waves propagating in empty space Travel at a speed of 299,792 km per second Seeing wavelength- color of visible light is a measure of its wavelength- a prism separates light into different wavelengths Electromagnetic Radiation- what we think of as light is just one tiny wavelength range of electromagnetic radiation of that our eyes are sensitive to (radio waves are another type of light)...
