Astronomy Visualizing the Expansion - expansion of the universe requires you to think in a higher dimension, beyond the dimensions that your senses can interpret - imagine the universe through the eyes of animals that can only sense in 2D If the Universe is expanding, what is it expanding into? And if it’s expanding doesn’t it have an edge? What’s beyond the edge? - Balloon analogy: the universe expands into a higher dimension. From their point of view there is no edge. If the geometry is spherical you can go round and come right back where you started, if you have enough time. If it’s not spherical you would go on forever - Same goes for us except notch up the dimensionality so we’re a 3D universe expanding into the 4 th dimension - There’s an effective edge to the Universe namely our astrophysical horizon but it its not the same thing o I can look out into space and because the universe is 13 billion years old you can’t look beyond that o Universe is circumscribed by the limit of the speed of light
