Robert England HON 111 – Week 5 The name Sappho is well-known today for two reasons: Sappho is famous for being a great poet; she is infamous for being a homosexual. We have seen both sides to her appear through the ages; those in the most ancient times saw her mostly for her poetic side, and as time went on her sexuality entered the focus more. We in modern times attempt to see both but it is usually the infamous part of Sappho that usually is focused upon. It is these two elements of her being that have been most influential in how people from the past to the present read and interpret her work. From the evidence that we have today, Sappho was widely regarded to be a great poet. According to Prof. Moxley, she created poetry at a crucial crossroads between spoken and written word, and is regarded as a main creator of the poetic device known today as lyrical poetry. Although we have very little of her work today, the ancient Greeks had all of it, and apparently praised it very highly.
