The Assassination of Abraham Lincoln Abraham Lincoln was assassinated six weeks after being re-elected as President. Why, because to some people with Confederate sympathies, the worst enemy of all was the President himself. Ever since Lincoln was elected to serve as America’s 16th President, he had received letters warning him of assassination plots. The issue of slavery, states rights and the ensuing Civil War made him very controversial. One letter, even warned that a plan to kill Lincoln would also target Secretary of State William Seward. Just days before his assassination, the President had a dream that troubled him. He talked with his wife about it. He told his cabinet and his bodyguard, William Crook: “About ten days ago, I retired very late and I soon began to dream. …I heard subdued sobs, as if a number of people were weeping… …I went from room to room; no living person was in sight… Before me was a coffin, on which rested a corpse wrapped in funeral vestments. Around it were stationed soldiers who were acting as guards… …'Who is dead in the White House?' I demanded of one of the soldiers, 'The President,' was his answer. 'He was killed by an assassin.' …I slept no more that night; and although it was only a dream, I have been strangely annoyed by it ever since.”
