2/25/08 Wisdom Literature- One of the most common forms of writing in the ancient world. There is a universal desire for guidelines such as those of Proverbs. Job is a difficult book to locate. No one knows where “Uz” was and nothing in the book ties Job to a specific king/country/etc. How does the philosophy of Job fit the mold for post exilic (5 th century>) times? The Israelites are being punished for their sins even though some believed they had not sinned. Job seems to be an ancient story because of his nomadic lifestyle including living in tents, measuring his wealth by livestock instead of by gold which is what it would have been measured by during the monarchial times. The narrative of Job Satan comes to God among holy beings in a heavenly court and antagonizes him saying there are no pure humans on earth. God asks if he has considered his servant Job to which Satan replies that if God did not protect Job and make his life so comfortable, Job would not be loyal to God by any means. God
