Jonathan Davey 1 Pre-school Differences What is, and what is the function of a preschool? Merriam Webster’s eleventh edition collegiate dictionary defines a preschool as a school for children usually younger than those attending elementary school or kindergarten. So what purpose does a preschool have? Most preschools are designed to encourage a child’s growth by exposing him or her to an active social environment, as well as, helping the child develop mentally by creating stimulating activities for the preschoolers. Likewise, parents of preschoolers sent their children to a preschool so they will be socially adept and intellectually similar to other students once their child begins kindergarten. Some parents might even go out on a limb and say that if a parent does not have their child attend preschool, then he or she will be inferior to the other students who have had experience around other students and in the academic environment. However, various cultures have their own preference on how a preschool environment should be. Preschools in Kyoto, Japan focus more on the students’ interaction with one another without the aid of a teacher, while preschools in the United States put more emphasis on teacher- student interaction. For example, a student at a preschool in Japan was misbehaving by throwing flashcards over a railing and overall causing mischief. One student approached the teacher to tell
