- Functions of law o Social Change o Social control o Dispute settlement - Law as a Legitimate Authority o Law should be obeyed even if we are critical or its specific content Example: Law created by political decision o Law is widely respected as legitimate - Max Weber o How likely is it that a person will obey a command from a specific source? Called imperative coordination (the reasons someone would obey. ..reason, self interest etc.) Can depend on custom, social ties, material interests and legitimacy of the command o Three types of legitimate authority Traditional Relies on peoples respect for tradition (religious authority, the state itself etc.) Charismatic Command is obeyed because of the exceptional characteristic of the person who issued the command Rational-Legal Followed because the person who is issuing the command has that authority within a legal system (we follow laws because of the position law holds in society) - Why do we follow these 3 types of authority? o
