- What is social control? o Maintaining order o Promoting predictable behaviour - Types of social control o 2 processes: Internalization of norms Making the person(s) believe that they want to quit smoking cause it’s bad for them and others i.e. quitting smoking Paying your bill and not a bill that was given to you by mistake External pressure When we pressure people not to smoke because it is bad for the people around them Enforced through positive and negative sanctions o Negative Do not . .. do not steal or you will go to jail, do not kill or you will go to jail o Positive giving people a reason to do something. ..tax breaks for donations etc - Types of social control o Formal Come with a set rule Job interviews. ..laws which say what they can and can’t ask you i.e. marital status. ..by law prohibited from asking o Informal (unwritten rule) Job interview. ..how would you dress to the interview. ..no one says wear a suit - Formal social control
