INTRO: A WORLD OF STATES Looking at regions (user defined, no singular world standard) o No matter where you are, you are in an area defined as a state THE STATE OF STATES Sovereign states owned and operated by the government of those places o Antarctica not a state, but recognized as a state o New concept The US is the oldest sovereign state China, Iran, many European countries Most planet falls into younger category Africa 50-60 years of sovereignty Before sovereignty? o People would have identified themselves with a group of other people Leader, sovereign ruler of the “peoples” not a place 1000 years ago you had the king of the Franks (the French peoples) Today, everything is tied to territory States o You call a state a “country” On an international stage they are called states, o Legally defined territory that has been recognized by other states 193 in the world Nation o A group of people who share a common culture May want to have their own government, rule themselves o Unlimited numbers of nations Lots of them infinite number Nation-state o People who share a common culture and rule themselves in a defined political area Germany France ALL of Europe Dutch Belgians Italians Spaniards Iran (been around forever) China Japan Korea (best example, 100% culturally/ethnically Korean people)

Is every state a nation-state? o Not really, some entities are states, but not nation states The US no common culture, same language/religion India multicultural/religious Sudan two nation state South= black African North= Islamic US has a common culture based on ideas
