Grace Leinberger – Module 6 Assignment - Health effects of vegetarian and vegan diets1.New concepts learned: One new thing that I learned was 35% of people in India follow the vegetarian diet. Overall, many more people are vegetarian than I expected. I also learned vegetarians are sub-classified as lacto-ovo vegetarians who eat dairy products and/or eggs and vegans who do not eat any animal products. Also, being a vegetarian can actually improve your health. Studies of Western vegetarians have consistently reported that vegetarians have a lower BMI than comparable non-vegetarians. And the causes of colo-rectal cancer are not well understood but researchers agree that diet is important, and there is substantial, although not conclusive, evidence that diets high in red and processed meat are associated with a moderate increase in colo-rectal cancer risk.
