BIO 204 Review Sheet for Exam IV CHAPTER 22 – Descent with modification: A Darwinian View of Life: Fecundity- Number of offspring. Evolution- A change in relative proportions of heritable variation over a succession of generations. Intraspecific- Competition between the same species.(A-Between) Interspecific- Competition between different species. (E-Different) Population- A group of interbreeding individuals of a single species in a common area. Why weren’t Darwin’s ideas embraced at first- Because his ideas opposed religious views, and Plato and Aristotle had different ideas. Know the major players (Hutton, Lyell…), ideas (Uniformitarianism), and events that led up to Darwin’s theory. o Georges Cuvier- Documented fossil species. He believed in catastrophism, the idea that when species were destroyed, the area was re-populated with new species by immigration. o Hutton- Believed in Gradualism, a belief that land forms could be explained by mechanisms that are currently operating. (ex. Canyons are formed by rivers, different layers are also formed through time). o Lyell- Took Hutton’s belief and made Uniformitarianism, a belief that geological processes have not changed throughout earth’s history. Geological forces of nature have been exactly the same through history. He also said that 1 small change will do nothing, but many accumulated will have an impact. o
