BIO 204 Review Sheet for Exam IV CHAPTER 24 – The Origin of Species: Speciation- The origin of an entire new species. Can be divided into: o Anagenesis- The accumulation of changes associated with the transformation of a species. o Cladogenesis- The budding of new species from a single species. This type promotes diversity by increasing the number of species. What is the most common species definition in used today? o Biological Species Concept(BSC)- Interbreed in nature to produce viable, non-sterile offspring. How and why does it work so well (i.e., multiple barriers; behavior, mechanical, postzygotic….? o What are the aforementioned definitions shortcomings? Prezygotic Barriers- Things that hinder sperm from reaching the egg in the wild: o Habitat- Some species may live in different areas, therefore hindering meeting cand reproducing. o Behavior- The way mates are attracted, Blue-Footed Booby dances. o Temporal- Some species breed at different times of the year(spring vs. Fall). o Mechanical- Some are anatomically incompatible, pollination may not be transferred. o
