Land plants are terrestrial plants because they are land plants and inhabit deserts, grasslands, and forests. They evolved from charophyceans. Know the major plant attributes, including those that tie and separate these group from charophyceans o Peroxisomes- Enzymes found outside the chloroplasts that help minimize the loss of photorespiration products. o Apical Meristems- Located at the tips of roots. They distinguish tissue growth for cells to be roots or stems. o Retained Multicellular Embryo- o Alternation of Generations- When 2 multicellular body forms alternate, each form producing the other. Does not occur in the charophyceans. o Sporangia(singular sporangium)- Multicellular organs found in the sporophyte generation of plants that produce spores. o Gametangia- Multicellular organs that produce the gametes for bryophytes, pteridophytes, and gymnosperms. o Archegonium- Female o Antheridium- Male o Monopholetic- When multiple species evolve all at once, instead of separately. o
