This represents multiple aspects of Carribean experience because internal exile can erode your identity whichhappened to Carribeans often due to trying to fight the oppression. That can get tiring to where you’re materialistically satisfied. Internal exile is almost self explanatory to me, it’s as if you’ve exiled who you are internally to be able to fit in externally. Carribeans struggledwith this often when dealing with colonizers. Glissant’s Open Boat, expresses the how it was a struggle to be vigilant in that situation and not know what was about to happen to them for all those years,”….finally the alliance with the imposed land, suffered, and redeemed”(Glissant 7),expresses how it became too easy for people to just adjust to theirnew lifestyle and think they were there some greater good and little did they know they were there for someone’s else greater good. 3)Jamaica Kincaid’s , Lucy shows joy in the middle of trauma because Lucy herself is a preserver. She was oppressed t throughout her journey by multiple peopleyet she ensured she would keep going and not let her trauma plan her future. She uprooted her life for something better and thought that things may be smoother than they were, she knew she would go through adversaries but maybe not as many as she did. Even still, she used those adversaries as building
blocks to keep building herself and her character. Lucy knew who she was but she didn’t become comfortable with her self until she had to make adjustments throughout her journey. We often think we know ourselves the best but soon we find out that we know very little and that we all have more adjusting to do just like Lucy did. Lucy’s theme is more comparable to the life we’re living now even though the setting is older which is what I loved most about this book because
