FINAL REVIEW- RESEARCH METHODS 1.) PROPRIETARY RESEARCH= research data gathered by a private organizations that are available to the general public only if released by that organization. 2.) CLIENT “EXPECTATIONS”= motivate person doing research to manipulate result 3.) READER PROFILES= provides a demographic summary of the readers of a particular publication; can be used to focus the content of the publication, prepare advertising promotions, and increased subscriptions; detail of who is reading it 4.) ITEM SELECTION STUDIES= a readership study used to determine who reads specific parts of the newspaper 5.) READER/NON READER= study that contrasts non readers of newspapers or magazines with regular readers; 3 rd type of newspaper readership 6.) USES AND GRATIFICATIONS= used to study all media content; can determine the motives that lead to newspaper reading and the personal and psychological rewards that result from it; asked what the motives are behind their readings 7.) JOURNALIST READER COMPARISONS= research comparing differences or characteristics of people writing versus people reading 8.) AIDED RECALL= system for asking people what articles they read or advertisements they see. A disadvantage is that sometimes the subjects think they saw an ad because they were aided- validity concern 9.) TRACKING= people (studies) identify which parts of an article they had read and then they mark it with a color pencil 10.) CIRCULATION RESEARCH= there’s 2 types: 1--- uses particular group and measure circulation EX: proportion of households that are reached in certain areas; 2--- uses individual reader; measures aspects of delivery and pricing on reader’s behavior EX: fed up with soggy newspaper when raining 11.) READABILITY RESEARCH= sum total of all the elements and their interactions that affect the success of a piece of printed material
