Human Communications April 3, 2008 Listening Project: Sandra Steingraber People always wonder if you’re really listening, to what they have to say. I, myself, often ponder this thought as well, when presenting in front of a class. Things such as, “Are they hearing what I am really saying”, or “Do they even care” tend to drift through my mind. One would be very surprised to see in what they could learn from listening well; listening enables you to acquire knowledge of others, the world, and even yourself. For this very reason, I always try to be an active and attentive listener whenever I am attending a presentation such as a seminar or lecture. Using the Process of Listening can help one become the best listener they can be. Sometimes the first step in the Listening Process, receiving, can be the most challenging. Just being in attendance is the first and easiest task to perform. If a speaker comes off as being boring, it is hard to keep focus on them for extended periods of time. At the same time, you are receiving both verbal and non-verbal messages from the speaker.
