Astronomy January 30, 2008 Lecture 6 Photoelectric effect- mechanism when light shines on a certain surface, the surface gives off electrons. As long light is in the process of moving across space or through a material, it has both wave and particle properties. o When you use the light to do something, however, it “chooses” to act as either a particle or wave, depending on what you’re using it for. Atmospheric window- the region of wavelength of various waves out in space that can cross into the atmosphere. Hot objects produce light waves. Fahrenheit scale- took low point to be an ice brine solution. High point was his own body temperature. o Called brine solution 0, and body temp 100. Celsius scale- took low point to be ice water. High point was boiling water. o Celsius has 1.8 times larger scale than Fahrenheit. o Temperature- measure of average velocity of particles in substance you’re measuring. o
