To ensure the crucible is dry, heat it till the crucible bottombecomes dull red in color.2.Cool the crucible and weigh them (with the lid) accurately to ±0.1 mg and record thedata.3.To each crucible, add 1.0 – 1.5g of precut to an appropriate length 18 gage pure copperwire and weigh the crucible/lid and content accurately ±0.1 mg and record.4.Add enough powdered sulfur (approximately 1g) into the crucible; avoid a large excess, because burning excess sulfur requires time.5.Bring the crucible and content, with the lid slightly ajar to evaporate sulfur dioxide (SO2)gas under the fume hood.6.Star heating them moderately first and then more intensely.7.Continue heating intensely until sulfur ceases to burn around the lid (it take about 15-25minutes).8.Toward the end of the heating cycle, play the flame around the sides and lid to evaporateany residual sulfur deposit.
