Mike Blasius LCS 151 February 4, 2008 Professor Coughlin Society Versus Primal Culture Ever since the inception of society, man has strived to attain a civilized culture, a  culture which is the direct opposite of the barbaric, primal culture which is intrinsic to  mankind. Dr. Sigmund Freud argued that people might be happier in a more primal  state as opposed to the society that exists today whose purpose is to avoid suffering.  Freud also believed that in an effort to reduce suffering, man actually creates more  suffering than necessary by imposing civilization. I believe that Dr. Freud’s ideas are  valid, but also have many aspects in which they are not wholly plausible. One idea which exists in society which is in accordance with Freud’s thoughts is  the use of laws. Man created laws in order to protect society from itself. This is  important because the idea itself implies that men are naturally destructive towards
