Lesson 2 Discussion - InterprofessionalCollaboration & AdvocacyPrepare a response to the following questions:Describe the professionals who collaborated in Vivian's care. How couldinterprofessional collaboration been improved and what impact would this have hadon her care?In what ways might participation in a clinical trial influence how health careproviders interact with each other and with patients?Do you think Susie RN's approach to patient care is different from that of thedoctors'? In what ways does Susie's approach to Vivian's care change as the storyprogresses? The professionals who collaborated in Vivian’s care were the primary oncologist, clinicalfellows, radiologic and MRI technologist, and the oncologist nurse. At the beginning of themovie each of these professionals completed their responsibility or job on the patient, Vivian, without ever once communicating with one another about the findings and plan of care for her.Interprofessional collaboration could have been improved by effective and continuouscommunication of the patient’s health and clinical findings. Communication with one anotherwould have ensured that the patient’s needs were met not just physically but emotionally andmentally. Also, having the professionals working together to communicate with Vivianeffectively could have guaranteed that everyone understood and determined what needed to beimproved in her plan of care, as well to make sure she was involved in her own plan of care.Inpatient mortality is linked to work environment characteristics, including nurse-physicianrelationships, manager attitudes, and nurse autonomy (Blosky & Spegman, 2015). If clear andeffective communication was implemented, Vivian may have not experienced severe side effectsof the chemotherapy treatment, whereby they could have been managed and maintained early onin her treatment. According to Blosky and Spegman (2015), “Poor communication is at the rootof many chronic problems in healthcare”. In the movie we could see that Vivian’s needs andfeelings were not being considered and she suffered towards the end of her life. To the pointwhere the clinician wasn’t even aware that Vivian chose not to be resuscitated if her heart wereto stop beating. The result of this error almost caused Vivian’s wishes to be disregarded.Participation in a clinical trial may influence how health care providers interact with each otherand with patients by helping them in being aware that patients are not guinea pigs but rather areliving individuals that have feelings and needs to be met. Therefore being aware that patientswho decide to participate in clinical trials are to be provided with the best quality and safe care,in order for future patients that may experience the same chronic conditions can receive the best
care and treatment to live a long and healthy life. It’s important for health care providers to be
