Assignment 2Uniqlo Supply Chain ScandalSidharth MuraleedharanSupply Chain Management, Saskatchewan PolytechnicADMN-601-002: Introduction to ProcurementProf. Joseph BaniniApril 05, 2022
IntroductionIn 1972, Tadashi Yanai inherited from her father a series of 22 men's sewing shops(Martin Roll, 2021). You have set goals to transform the family business plan from a casualfit to a casual outfit (Martin Roll, 2021). By 1998, he had successfully opened more than 300Uniqlo stores throughout Japan (Martin Roll, 2021). Uniqlo is a wholly-owned subsidiary ofFast Retailing Company Limited (Martin Roll, 2021). Since September 2019, production hasgrown to more than 2,250 stores in 25 countries in Asia, Europe and the US (Martin Roll,2021). It is the largest clothing line in Asia with more than 800 stores in Japan alone (MartinRoll, 2021). Uniqlo aims to be the largest retailer in the world, based largely on growth in theUS, China and the Internet (Martin Roll, 2021). If Uniqlo achieves this ambition, it willlaunch Inditex (Zara's parent company) as its global asset leader (Martin Roll, 2021).Scandal and the Contributing FactorsAccording to War On Want and SACOM, an investigation into two Chinesefactories Uniqlo in 2016 led to the sad discovery of human rights abuses, from overtimeand overtime paid to dangerous chemical laboratories Undercover investigators found thatduring the peak period, workers had to be immersed. Their feet swelled in hot water torelieve pain and fatigue and were forced to work overtime because their wages were belowthe regional average (Abdallah, 2021). Although Fast Retailing claims to require greatercare to protect the health and safety of workers, SACOM has found that they are underoperating conditions including high temperatures, unsafe areas, no protective equipment, poor ventilation and heavy cotton dust (Abdallah, 2021). Air levels, the use of toxicchemicals and the high risk of electrical leaks make it clear that Uniqlo was far from theethical product it is trying to disclose to the public (Abdallah, 2021).
