7. Describe the characteristics of the 1920’s in the U.S. that make the decade appear unique. What accounts for each of these characteristics? - The economic situation is quite agitated. - It levels out around 1922. We see a sow growth of prosperity. We see the gross national product double during the 1920’s. Wages go up 13 percent. - The reason for prosperity: The war. All of the money people had to borrow from us to keep the war going. More money was owed to the U.S. than anywhere else in the world. All of that investment that the English and French did in the 1920’s is now owned by us. Now, today is the complete opposite. - The Europeans have torn up their real estate. They have destroyed thousands of square miles of farm land. They need our corn, wheat. So we ship it over as fast as we can. So farmers see improvements in the first part of the 20’s. - The third thing that makes us prosperous is Henry Ford and his car. He is the complete opposite of the robber baron. He is very anti-Semitic. He did NOT invent the car. They are rich mans toys. Ford made the car affordable 1. The car initially costs 2k. He continues to make the same car for over 10 years (the model T). The car is meant to go off-roading. It has a very simple engine. Comes in only black, and the differential, you could take it apart 2. What ford does is keeps working to make the car cheaper and cheaper. By the end of its run, it was 260 dollars. By the year 1929, we have more automobiles on the road than the rest of the world. This car changes the face of America. 3. It leads to the creation of lots of other industries. The paint, rubber, glass industry. 4. Motels, gasoline, etc. All of those grow too. 5. This automobile is one of those products that make other products. 6. Firestone and Rockefeller buy trolley cars in other cities and rip them up because with the Model T now out, Firestone wants to sell tires and Rockefeller wants to sell gasoline. -
