A culture that accepts only one way of doing things and one set of values and beliefs, which can cause problems for minority employees Ethnorelativism Belief that groups and subcultures are inherently equal Pluralism Mean that an organization accommodates several subcultures Most organizations are making a conscience effort to move from ethnorelativism to pluralism Many managers don’t even realize they are failing to hire, etc. others who are different The Changing Workplace o Companies that ignore diversity have a hard time competing in a multicultural global environment o The people who used to be minorities now make up for a majority of US population o Challenges Minorities Face Most white men don’t understand b/c they are not intentionally trying to be racist or sexist Bias in the workplace will show up in very subtle ways Ex: Disregard by a subordinate of the minority manager’s directions Bullpen Minorities waiting for their chance then having to prove themselves over and over Biculturalism Sociocultural skills and attitudes used by racial minorities as they move back and forth between dominant culture and their own o Management Challenges Key areas of management challenge for dealing w/ a diverse workforce Picture page 423 2
