ATOMIC STRUCTURE Chemistry is the study of matter, which is composed of atoms . carbon oxygen carbon dioxide oxygen and nitrogen ELEMENTS COMPOUND MIXTURE Matter is classified into substances and mixtures. Substances consist of elements or compounds. Dalton’s model accounted for mass laws noted at the time: 1. Conservation of mass 2. Constant composition 3. Multiple proportions New experiments soon revealed that an atom is divisible: Cathode rays consist of electrons, whose charge and mass were determined in Millikan’s oil drop experiment. Thomson proposed the plum pudding model of the atom.
