- The American academy of paediatrics has recommended that children
younger than 24 months of age should not be exposed to television
- Recommendations not being followed
- Media habits may be related to
o Youth drinking

o Poorer social relationships
o Fewer social interactions
o School performance
o Aggression
o Prevalence of symptoms of psychological trauma
- Do infants even look?
o Across all type of content, children increase their attention to the
screen form 11% of total looking time at 6 moths to 39% at 3 years
o Appears to be a shift around 30 months
o Children aged 12 to 15 moths show substantial amounts (48% to
74% depending on things such as familiarity) of looking at programs
intended for these age group (Barr et al., 2003)
Learning from technology and digital media
- Do they learn?
o Learn more when watching live teacher opposed to seeing on a
screen
o Young infants do not learn well from the tv
o 15 month old some signs of learning
o Video deficit resets 24 to 36 months period
Teach DVD’s
- Highest learning from parent teaching opposed to videos
Advertising
- According to Schor 2004, by 18 months of age, babies can recognise logos
and by 2 years they ask for products by brand name
