Dina Aloteibi Teryn Phelps Daniel Uribe Ruquayyah Obaid 3/6/08 The Cask of Amontillado Setting: “It was about dusk…” The story takes place at the end of the day; it’s a time warped perceptions, many shadows, and can represent uncertainty. “…one evening during the supreme madness of the carnival season. “ From this quote we can conclude that there are Parties/ festivities in streets during the night time meaning that there are many people out with a lack of order; this would be a perfect time to commit a crime. The story moves to a dark and gloomy setting, which is the catacomb of Montesur’s family. Here, his family members are buried along the walls which are lines lined with nitre. Atmosphere: gloomy, negative, “…one evening during the supreme madness of the carnival season…. “ Although there was facilities going on and there was friendly interaction between Fortunato and Montesur, the fact that this was narrated in first person

Since theyre going to the catacomb, we can predict that he is going to die soon. Also, there are bones everywhere which signify death. Putting on a mask of black silk, The fact that Fortunato puts this on, is foreshadowing his death, as it can represent the preparation take before an individual is lynched. The fact that they were going into the catacomb is also another clue foreshadowing Fortunatos death. Symbolism: As I said these words I busied myself among the pile of bones of which I have before spoken. Throwing them aside The bones symbolize death. Nitre (mold) symbolizes a slow death....
