Dr. Leiby English 1B March 29, 2008 Oppression Oppression has lived through out history, people have been oppressed in many different ways and to this day, some are still being oppressed. It is still continuing and many people fall victims of it. There are three different types of oppression that people can go through. Many are victims of external oppression, some of internal oppression, and others of horizontal oppression. External oppression is when a person is oppressed in any physical way. Internal oppression is when a person is oppressed mentally, using their feelings, and their emotions. Horizontal oppression is when a person is oppressed and they direct their anger towards others, instead of directing it to the ones oppressing them. The book The Blues Eye , by Toni Morrison gives examples of the three different types of oppression within the book, using various characters. Two of the characters that most demonstrate the three different types of oppression are Pecola and Cholly. Both of the characters in the book have been oppressed in some way or another. The two characters Pecola and Cholly are very significant characters that demonstrate oppression. Toni Morrison uses Pecola and Cholly to show the three different types of oppression with in the novel. The first example is external oppression, which is common in both Pecola and Cholly. They are both victims of external oppression in a sexual way. To begin with, Cholly first became externally oppressed, when he was participating in a sexual act with another character in the book named Claudia. As he and Claudia begin to engage in a having act, two white men interrupted them, “The men had shone a flashlight right on his behind. He had stopped,
