I believe this element directly related with the theme in the sense that war in general is 4. conflict. It is Man vs. Man but when soldiers experience trauma it becomes Man vs. Self. War is a super tough place to be because so many people end up mentally messed up because of it. As we can only imagine I am sure that Lt. Cross would have suffered with PTSD after the death of Lavender. Only the people that can mentally block things out are able to persevere through the mental aspects of war....
