Identifying Conflict 2 Identifying Conflict in Two Texts In the “Gift of the Magi,” by O. Henry (1906), there were many conflicts. One of the conflicts was that both Jim and Dell sold their most prized possessions to buy one another a Christmas gift. Once they did this the gifts they got each other did not matter, because neither of them could use them. Dell cut her hair, therefore the combs Jim got were useless and Jim sold his watcher so the chain Dell got him for his watch was useless as well. The characters are at odds with one another because they both want to give each other gifts for Christmas, but cannot afford them so they had to compromise. Another conflict within the story is society. As a society we see that Christmas is about giving and getting gifts, when it should not be. Having them both feel like they had to give one another gifts caused the biggest conflict within the story.
