032607 HIST 278 1923 Comintern and KMT 1924 Whampoa established 1925 March: sun dies May 30 th Movement 1926-1928 Northern Expedition I. May 30 th Movement a. Protesting against Japanese employers – one Chinese was killed, there was a protest and they fired on some of the protesters. Capable of mobilizing more members after this incident. People see this as a turning point because the response around China to this was across classes, and were fairly profound. Nationalist and Communist at this time were able to mobilize more members. It also leads to tensions between the nationalist and Communists. It leads to people who are joining up. CKS became nervous about this. II. 1926-1928 Northern Expedition a. Nationalist and Communist armies move out of the south, out of Canton province and start to move up and begin to unite the countries (defeat the warlords) III. 1927 a. April – purge of the CCP, move nearly destroys Communist party Marxism and Leninism – Communist Manifesto Class was the central concept. It meant people’s access to the tools/modes of production. Different class if you owned the tools/owned the land, different from the people that worked the land. Tools for production used as a dividing line between the classes. CCP is an important way to distinguish people in its society. Identity would be taught, and different classes were taught to go against/compete against one another. It underpins one of the ways Communist government changed society. We also need to understand Marxist vision of historical change – different classes compete against one another. Bourgeoisie went against nobility in feudal times, started to create their own governments that served their own interests. Capitalism went around the globe and changed the world, this progress, however also brought oppression – creating the next
