AP US History Mrs. Mahler On July 4 th , John Adams, the beloved second President of the United States from 1797 through 1801, and first ever vice president, passed away. Adams was one of the most influential founding fathers for our country, and was a large supporter of the American constitution and revolution. He was a federalist, a brilliant lawyer and statesman. It is sad for us Federalists, when we think about the passing of this great man, to realize that his presidency will be remembered in a more negative way. This is because of the opinions of the Democratic-Republicans about the XYZ Affair and his Alien and Sedition acts. Before Adams became president he achieved many things. Not only did he support American independence, but he also assisted Jefferson in drafting the Declaration of Independence. He represented the Continental Congress in Europe, he was a major negotiator of the peace treaty with Great Britain, and he was responsible for getting money from Amsterdam, which was necessary for the revolution.
