Religion 121L, Spring 2008 Hauer & Young, Chapter 7: Israel’s Sacred Songs (The Writings I) Pay attention to the 3 worlds. Know key “facts” about literary and historical worlds of these books. Notice that this is the first of two chapters about the third section of the Hebrew Scriptures, the writings or kethuvim. In addition to the textbook chapter, read Psalm 8, 13, 79, and 138 and Lamentations 1-4. Identify information about the composition of the texts (AKA literary history) e.g. when, where, by whom, for whom, etc. were these composed. This varies from book to book. Pay attention to the possibilities and the variety o sdsfgsdag-w1 . Remember the types of criticism introduced in Chapter 2 and notice which ones Hauer and Young discuss as relevant to the text or book or group of books. o ss Pay attention to the literary characteristics being considered (AKA to the text itself) Notice the genre or type of literature under discussion. Again, how are these different from the historical narratives we’ve been reading? What are the sub-categories of Psalms? How are these types used in other books? o
