Chapter 24 - What inspires the Baroque? o Aimed at propagandistically restoring Catholicism’s predominance. o The reaction to mannerism. o Mannerism- a style of later Renaissance art that tried to find a different method to be more exciting and different from masters of the Renaissance. - What is the genius of Bernini? o He was on of the most important and imaginative artists of the Italian Baroque ear and its most characteristic and sustaining spirit. o His statues seem to be moving through time and space - Why is the phrase ‘grandeur and obedience’ a useful term to consider in studying Baroque architecture? o It is useful to consider because Italian Baroque art is qualified by expanse and its refusal to be confined to spatial settings. There was also sensitivity to patrons’ needs, and how they wanted to convey their message. - How does the work of Borromini differ from that of Bernini? o
