My curriculum project will focus on second grade. The standards I reviewed were the language arts
standards. The Virginia standards and Common Core standards have some similarities and some
differences. The Common Core standards are easy to follow because they are less in depth than the
Virginia State standards. The list of objectives for the Common Core standards are vaguer than the
Virginia Standards. The Virginia Standards give more descriptions and more points to focus on. The
standards would be easy to follow due to the vagueness of the objectives. This would leave lead way for
teachers to really explore a topic and not have to concentrate on just specific points.
According to the core standards website the common core standards align standards with
expectations of colleges and careers. The standards are more consistent but are more rigorous than state
standards. Just looking at the writing portion of both standards the common core seems more advance
putting more emphasis on writing and research whereas the state standards are still focusing on
