BLUES CONTINUED -Classical Blues singers -Bessie Smith (aka Empress of the Blues) -Mamie Smith sold 8,000 copies the first week and gave rise to Race Records -Victories Spivey ”Black Snake Moan” sold 150,000 copies in the first year and told ppl in the record industry that Blues was profitable -Clara Smith -Trixie Smith -Bertha “Trippie” Hill -Race Records -the first one was located in NY and called Black Swan Records *-Okeh -Jeanette Records -Susan Records -Paramount Records -Pittsburgh and Jazz Why is Pittsburgh linked so much with Jazz? - TOBA (Theater Owner Bookers Assoc.) was a circuit that the musicians would play and once you were involved in it, you were an automatic success - in order to get the great players that were on the Circuit, you had to take the lesser known players who would in turn gain notoriety and money - TOBA helped the Classical Blues singers get famous *Most of the players would stop over in Pittsburgh to rest. -Circuit was Buffalo, NYC, DC, Baltimore, (rest in Pittsburgh), Chicago
