Alexis QuallsENGL 162Dr. Scott-DouglassSeptember 21, 2021The GiftWhen I see the statue, ‘The Gift’,that was placed in front of Lorain County CommunityCollege Stocker Arts Center, I can't help but stare and think about the real meaning of this pieceof art. The sculpture, created by Dale Slavin, is a tall marble stone piece that could definitelyhave many different meanings to different people. This piece of art almost looks like there arethree different figures, two of which are struggling to carry the words on their shoulders. Thethird figure is looking straight ahead, almost determined like. The block on top of the figures isengraved with four quotes.I believe this piece was set there as a signal piece of public art to inspire the communityand all citizens who walk there. The sculpture makes me feel a sense of encouragement. Thequotes are all things that would be said to help one persevere. The quotes on the sculpture consistof ones from William Shakespeare, Toni Morrison, and the Cavalier Poets. The Quote on thefront of the sculpture facing outwards states ``Carpe Diem!”, the latin term for “seize the day”.Almost as if it's telling me to go out and be great to the world. I interpreted the quotes as if theywere saying to fulfill my dream and be the main one to do that for myself because only we canachieve it. And education is one of the most important things in the world and to spread yourvoice are some of the things I interpreted from Joseph Addison and Toni Morrison.
