March 21, 2016 Glimmerville City Council 458 City Hall Dr. Glimmerville, VA 52114 Dear Glimmerville City Council Members, When an ecosystem is balanced, all of nature’s components are in harmony and there are no outside factors disrupting the natural balance. Many ecosystems are in danger of losing their natural balance due to human interference. In Sparksville, Grass Carp were introduced to the reservoir to control the overgrowth of aquatic grasses caused by the fertilizer used on nearby farmland. Unfortunately, the Grass Carp were able to quickly breed due to the abundance of vegetation. The overpopulation of carp caused the population of native species to decrease due to overcrowding. Without the carp, the overgrowth of sea grasses caused by fertilizer was disturbing the ecosystem balance. However, the carp was not an effective solution and further disturbed the balance by overcrowding native species. An invasive species can have several negative effects on an ecosystem. In Sparksville, the Grass Carp endangered the population of native species, creating competition for resources. Because the native species are indigenous to the reservoir, their population plays an important role in maintaining ecosystem balance.
