COMM 2600 Midterm / Sanae This study guide is meant to help you with your midterm preparation. It lists broad topics that you should review as well as some specific concepts and key terms. You should be able to define (in your own words), give original examples of, compare (describe the similarities between), contrast (describe the differences between), critique, and apply. You responsible for material from class and textbook. The test will consist of 30 multiple choice and T/F questions (.5% each), 1 short essay format question (worth 1%) plus one longer essay format question (worth 4%) which totals 20% weight described in your syllabus for the midterm weight. The midterm is Thursday Oct. 18. The longer essay question will ask you to apply concepts and theories to a case study that would be provided to you to read prior to the midterm. The case study will be in CuLearn two days before the midterm. You should download it and read it closely before the midterm exam. During the exam, do not bring your downloaded copy, I will bring a copy of the case study for you to glance at when answering your questions. While reading the case study at home, pay attention to what sort of question might be asked regarding this case study based on concepts we had studied in class and in the textbook and those provided below. During the midterm, you will have 2 questions to answer regarding the case study during your midterm. Chapter 1: Introduction What is communication competency? How can communication be described? Communication Competency- composed of knowledge, sensitivity, skills and values. Competence arises from interaction of theory, practice and analysis. Communication is the transferring of information and eliciting responses from each other, it is a social interaction. Why is competency important for individuals and for organizational communication? It is important because organizations need people who can speak well, listen, write, persuade others, demonstrate interpersonal skills, gather information and exhibit small group problem solving expertise. It is also important that a person knows what is appropriate in a certain situation. Language performance and the achievement of interpersonal goals are also important. o Knowledge- ability to understand the organizational communication environment o Sensitivity competency- ability to sense organizational meanings and feelings accurately o Skills competence- ability to analyze organizational situations accurately and to initiate and consume organizational messages effectively o Values competency- importance of taking responsibility for effective communication, thereby contributing to organizational excellence What is the importance of shared realities?
