Christian Tradition Essays Heresy vs. Orthodoxy Thesis: The war between the church heresies and the Orthodox Church goers was between different people of the century and different councils that gathered to make decisions. Council of Nicea- the issue that provoked the council of Nicea was the teaching of Ariu a priest from Alexandria Egypt that taught about the relationship between God and his Son. o Teaching was God was that only God and “the son” was only a second class God o At the council they disagreed with Aruis and approve a creed called the Nicene Creed. This creed linked father and son together. o The creed said the son is “one bin being with the Father” Council of Chalcedon- (451) this decided the nature of Jesus Christ. Considered the question of Christ’s human and divine nature and taught the incarnate of Jesus possessed a complete human nature and a complete divine nature united in one person. Augustine o Augustine became increasingly skeptical of Manicheans because he found that the astrologers had more facts then the Manicheans. He also realized that the Manicheans priests could not answer questions. Also believed that the Manicheans thought the kingdom of light as fundamentally weak and vulnerable to invasion by evil. Manicheans idea of God was based on a kind of material substance
