Results: During the c-fern experiment, the numbers of green and pale gametophytes were counted. The expected ratio of green to pale gametophytes was one to one. According to the actual results found, the green outnumbered the pale in a 1.2 to 1 ratio (Table 1). The parent plant involved in the genetic cross was a heterozygote, Gg. This means the fern carried a copy of both the dark green gene and the pale green gene. The numbers of green and pale sporophytes produced were counted. The expected ratio of green to pale sporophytes was three to one. This again, was slightly different than the actual data collected. According to the results found, the green outnumbered the pale in a 2.3 to 1 ratio (Table 1). Table 1: Gametophyte and Sporophyte phenotypes The data from the gametophyte and sporophyte counts were recorded and analyzed using the Chi-square test to determine if the pale leaf color is a recessive trait. When the gametophyte data was analyzed with the chi-square equation, a chi square value of 3.32 was calculated.
